Needs of Our Heroes
OFR assists with basic emergency needs to ease the pressure for our nations Heroes during the long process of receiving their benefits. The Veteran’s Administration estimates that as of November 1, 2014, 522,229 Veterans are awaiting benefits with 239,785 pending cases of over 125 days. With new found statistics, claims are now taking an average of 272 days to be processed – an increase of nearly 40 percent from 2011 – with some lingering for as long as a year or more. The error rate now hovers around 14 percent, and the mountainous backlog stands at nearly 900,000, as 53 Veterans reportedly die each day waiting for their benefits, according to the Center for Investigative Reporting.
There is a significant lapse of time between retirement and the onset of VA benefits (on average can take from six months to one year) causing many Veterans to lose homes and the inability to provide for the basic needs of their families.
OFR works with case workers and chains of command across the nation to identify families in need. These statistics alone clearly give reason for the existence of OFR, we are a bridge that will enable our Veterans to exist during the
VA claim process keeping them from financial devastation or the possibility of becoming homeless.
Operation First Response, Inc., (OFR) was founded in 2004 by Peggy Baker, our current President and CEO, in the Commonwealth of Virginia. OFR is a 501(c) 3 tax exempt nonprofit organization with a coordinating council that serves Wounded, Injured, Critically ill Service Members, Disabled Veterans and their families with emergency financial aid. It is made up of 7 individuals, including an aunt of a fallen Hero, a mother of Soldier, prior military service, current law enforcement, and a severely Wounded Warrior.
The staff of OFR has had the honor of working with our Nation’s wounded Heroes and their families on a daily basis since 2004. The support and generosity of our Volunteers and Donors has enabled us to meet literally thousands of their needs.
Our caring staff goes “above and beyond” to impress upon our Military, our deep respect and gratefulness to each of them. We serve our wounded and their families with compassion and understanding.
Taking the time to hear their concerns and find appropriate answers and resources to fulfill those needs. We have become seasoned and knowledgeable in what the families we serve will need to overcome the long road ahead.
Realizing that a very large part of what we do is listening and gathering valuable resources to help them with the multitude of issues that arise.
We as the recipients of their sacrifices will never be able to repay those Warriors who have been wounded in defense of our country,
But we can honor them by striving every day to provide the support these Heroes need to return to duty or transition as a proud Veteran into our communities.
